We served 191 women and children last year.

Since the founding of the original New Endeavors by Women program, now called New Transitions, we added many more housing programs: the New Endeavors Shelter Plus Care (S+C) program, New Generations, New Expectations (closed January 31, 2011), New Horizons, and New Hope (opened February 1, 2011). The mission of all five programs is to provide the interim step between homelessness and self-sufficiency by providing consistent support and assistance to the women and children who reside in our programs.

Every resident in our five housing programs works with a NEW case manager, and has access to a range of support services:

Employment/Education: NEW residents also receive personalized educational and employment counseling. An Education/Employment Specialist meets with each woman to identify and improve job skills, develop a professional resume, and prepare for job interviews. Residents are encouraged to improve reading and mathematics skills, and to work toward earning their GED or higher education degree. NEW staff members guide residents through the school selection and financial aid processes.

Housing: NEW staff members work with each resident to obtain safe and affordable housing. A Housing Specialist helps each woman repair poor credit if needed, understand the options available to her, and research the most promising opportunities.

Support Groups: Approximately 80% of NEW residents come to NEW from a substance abuse program. To help these women as they adjust to living with sobriety, NEW offers weekly support group meetings and workshops. Residents transitioning from a substance abuse treatment program are also required to attend NA/AA meetings, and to participate in an aftercare program.

Recreational Activities: To help and encourage NEW residents as they take control of their lives and move out of homelessness, NEW works with local organizations to provide cultural and personal enrichment programs for the residents. For example, students from the Potomac Massage Training Institute donate their time to give massages to NEW residents, church groups volunteer time to lead recreational activities, and organizations such as the Junior League provide life skills seminars and arts and crafts activities.

New Transitions

New Transitions residents are offered a variety of services by NEW staff, interns and volunteers. Residents work with a case manager to develop a treatment plan individualized to help each women meet her goal of becoming self-reliant. Residents receive medical and mental care, legal advice, and assistance with personal finances, time management, and goal-setting.

New Generations

New Generations family reunification program serves homeless women who are in the process of reunifying with their children.

Upon acceptance into the program, an individualized reunification plan is developed for each family which will address the goals and appropriate needs that are unique to the reunification process. Coupled with other support services, an emphasis is placed on teaching parenting skills and counseling parent and child/children with regard to surrounding issues that have developed as a result of the separation. Additionally, each parent is provided the necessary tools to establish appropriate relationships with schools, physicians and other professionals who may be involved with the care and development of their child/children. The intent is to coach parents to become more actively involved in the lives of their child/children and to be proactive to the needs of their families.

Shelter Plus Care

The Shelter Plus Care (S+C) Program is a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) program. New Endeavors by Women became a sponsoring agency in 1994.

Through this program, NEW provides private subsidized apartments and supportive services to women and their children, who are no longer in need of the structure that accompanies living in a shelter, but are not yet fully self-sufficient. The participating women have a case manager who visits them in their apartments.

New Horizons

New Horizons is a Permanent Supportive Housing program that links homeless families with a permanent residence and continual case management services. The program assists families through housing stabilization, maximizing levels of self-sufficiency and improving overall quality of life. Residents of the New Horizon program are maintained through development of individualized service plans and receive monthly case management sessions which are geared to achieve educational, career, and parental goals.

Residents of the New Horizons program have access to a myriad of comprehensive services provided by New Endeavors by Women to assist them in achieving their goals such as access to an Educational/Employment specialist, Housing Specialist, and support groups for women who have a history of substance abuse.

Through the efforts of New Horizons, families that have experienced homelessness can now focus on rebuilding a healthy family structure and improving their overall quality of life.

New Hope

New Hope was opened on February 1, 2011 when we transformed our New Expectations transitional housing program into a permanent supportive housing program. New Hope provides permanent supportive housing for 10 women living with HIV/AIDS. The program addresses a critical shortage of permanent supportive housing equipped to meet the health and wellness needs of women living with HIV/AIDS.
